  • We live in an environment that is changing exponentially faster and faster. It is no longer rare for us to see some of our constructs for thinking about and dealing with the world collapse before our eyes, and in order for us to keep up pace with the challenges we now face—or soon will—it is important to apply creative thought that is not bound up in the constructs of the past. This session will consider the powerful creativity through which we must shape our future and the underlying ways of thought, melding consideration of problem-solving that stresses the practicality of the designer's works with examination of the search for an embodiment of beauty that draws on artists' and scientists' inspiration from nature and mathematics.

  • Leading-edge Technologies Session Workshop A
  • 16:00-18:00Venue: Auditorium
  • "Technologies Interfacing with Nature"
  • Neri Oxman (Assistant Professor, Media Arts and Sciences, MIT Media Lab) Fiorenzo Omenetto (Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Tufts University)
  • The latest result of Neri Oxman’s research is the Silk Pavilion, a structure created on a digitally designed framework through the collaboration of 6,500 silkworms. This construct demonstrates that Oxman is both artist and designer who at the same time fully qualifies as scientist and engineer.
Fiorenzo Omenetto is a researcher noted for taking inspiration from the ancient material silk and reinventing it as a new material platform for electronics, optics, and medical applications. What Oxman and Omenetto have in common is the great diversity of the fields in which they are active—physical science and technology, art, and scientific pursuits. They seem to move at will between seemingly widely separated fields, creating new values. Here, examples of their approaches will be introduced for interactive analysis by participants.

  • Neuroscientist Sebastian Seung is the world's leading figure in analysis of neural circuits, or connectomes. The human brain comprises a hundred billion neurons and thousands of times as many possible connections in a neural network whose analysis is virtually impossible even given today's advanced scientific techniques. Seung has continued to challenge this “impossibility,” at the same time calling on elements of gamification to create a platform that will permit even children to participate in the process of drawing a connectome map. Seung and Joichi Ito will engage in a dialog to introduce the latest potential applications of Playing Games to Map the Brain.
